Monday 22nd November - So what is OPAL?

This mornings program features Alison Davies who is the Neighbourhood Development Coordinator for Burton and Morella Community Centres.

She talk to Gavin Fairbrother from the OPAL (Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle) Project, which is a project aimed at reducing the levels of childhood obesity in the communities of Salisbury/Salisbury Downs and Parafield Gardens.

Pooraka Farm Community Centre featured on Community Matters 10am, 25th October 2010

Community Matters Radio this week (Monday 25th October 2010, 10am) features the programs and news from Pooraka Farm Community Centre.

Heather Hewitt, the coordinator of the centre joins the show.

The show covers upcoming Christmas Gifts Workshop. The workshop over three sessions over 3 weeks, is low cost and fun way to make all the components of a Christmas hamper.

Also covered is the upcoming de-cluttering workshop and the regular Cafe Fridays program.

Youth Impact : Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre features Monday October 4th, 10am

On today's (Monday 4th) show we have Kate Walker from Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre.


Kate interviews Ben Whelem who is a volunteer at Twelve25 about his experiences and the many opportunities that volunteering can bring you!

 
We also look at some exciting school holiday activities, as well as the EPIC event - Northern Lights Multicultural Festival!

Pooraka's Farm Community Centre in a massive live show, Monday 13th September, 10am on PBAFM 89.7fm or live online at www.pbafm.org.au

Community matters radio this week has a live special presented by special guest host Heather Hewitt, guest Zoe How.

Joining Heather and Zoe will be Bryce Routley (by phone). Bryce will discuss his role as chair of the management committee, as a volunteer and as the host of Pooraka's Chef for the night program.

Heather and Zoe will also be discussing upcoming programs at the centre including flower arranging, wok cooking and discovering democracy.

The presenters will also discussing the cafe fridays program where last session for the term (which is coming up) features 'The Good Guys' who are coming out to talk about purchasing a laptop computer and they will be donating a printer as a door prize.

Heather will also discuss the centres AGM which is also coming up and giving a small insight to the guest speaker who will be there to talk about the prison biscuit ministry he is involved in.

Finally if there is time there will be some great music.

It's Adult Learners Week and you are invited! Beer included!

Many listeners may know that six of our community centers are run by not for profit incorporated associations where the board is drawn from the community. These centers operate from council owned buildings with the support of council funded staff members. Only Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre and The Mawson Centre have a different governance model.

Mawson Lakes community looking for world recognition : Community Matters Monday 19th July 10am PBA FM 89.7fm or streaming worldwide at www.pba.org.au


On todays show City of Salisbury's Learning Development Coordinator Annie Payne joins producer Bob Deinjum to discuss Mawson Lakes application for world wide safety recognition.


Background :-

Mawson Lakes is applying for accreditation as a Safe Community under the world wide Safe Community model formulated by the World Health Organisation. There is currently 180 safe communities across the world with new communities applying each month. Delfin have accreditation for several of their communities in Australia and Mawson Lakes is preparing for the visit by the auditors from NZ in October. The Mawson Lakes Community Safety Network committee is preparing the details with great assistance from Delfin and a letter of support has been received from Mayor Gillian Aldridge.

As a lead up to the audit in October the network is holding a Community Safety Expo on July 29th at The Mawson Centre from 5-8pm.

Community Matters features Bagster Road Community Centre Monday 17th May 2010 at 10am

The show this week features Michelle Grinter (Bagster Road Community Centre Coordinator) who joins Bob the producer to discuss the programs coming up at Bagster Road Community Centre Inc.

National volunteers week and Neighbourhood House week feature show

Community Matters Radio Show 10am today - Features Burton and Morella Community Centres

On todays radio show Alison Davies Neighbourhood Development Coordinator and Liane Saunders ACE Programs coordinator talk about some of the key programs at Burton and Morella Community Centres.

Salisbury East and Paddocks Community Centres feature Monday 5th April - 10am PBAFM 89.7 FM


In this weeks show Kathryn Brady talks about the massive line up of workshops and programs across Salisbury East Neighbourhood Centre and The Paddocks Community Centre.

Workshops being discussed include :-
  • 10 week ZUMBA workshop commencing 19th April - 11.30am-12.15pm
  • 4 week Polymer clay bead workshop commencing 22nd April
  • 6 week paper tole workshop
  • 5 week 'leather too' workshop commencing 13th May
  • 3 week jewelry making workshop
  • 5 week cooking with kids workshop commencing 27th May
  • Silk flower arranging.
The program also discusses the upcoming 30th Birthday Celebrations of The Paddocks Community Centre on Saturday 8th May. Massive, free community event. Will include markets, history, demonstrations and displays, food and entertainment for the whole family. Mark your calander now.

Neighbourhood house week occurs 10th to the 16th May and there is lots of free activities at both centres including Wii-ing for seniors, On-line shopping, Intro to Machinery embroidery, Creative writing workshops and come and try oil painting and line dancing.

Bagster Road Community Centre features on Monday 29th March



10am Monday - what better time for a coffee?
Tune in to PBA FM 89.7 MHz and hear whats happening at Bagster Road Community Centre.

This week Fiona Mulholland and Nicki King come in and talk about the programs coming up at Bagster including :-

Children and parents programs (including a very low cost creche and Monday Morning coffee group as part of the Salisbury North Early Years project)

Centre programs including Play connect (for children with autism), Salsa and Hip Hop classes, tibetan meditation, english conversation and literacy and numeracy programs. Low cost computer and technology courses also available.

School holiday programs at Bagster including the 'Cool 4 Kids - Dynamic Dinosaur show'. Bagsters school holiday programs are either free or low cost $5 per child.

Morella and Burton featured in Community Matters Show : Monday 8th March 10am on PBA FM 89.7

It might be a public holiday but the hard working team from the Community Matters radio show is still presenting a feature show on Morella Community Centre and Burton Community Centre.

Alison Davies the Coordinator of both centres joins our producer Bob for a chat about the capital developments occuring across the centres.

Leanne a staff member based at Morella also joins the show to talk about programs running at the centre including the workfore entry program.

Theatre of our youth : Community Matters 1st March 2010 at 10am PBA FM 89.7



This week’s radio show highlights the theatre programs run from Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre.

Kate Walker (Youth Services Officer) and Edwin (Theatre Tutor) from Urban Myth Theatre of Youth talk about the two theatre groups that run from the youth centre and the upcoming performances planned for later in the year.

This weeks show also highlights other programs run from Twelve25 including:-
• LAN Party (Computer Gaming)
• Fans for Food: A live music gig run by youth to raise funds for the youth food parcel project run from Twelve25.
• Responsible Service of Alcohol and Liquor Licensing Course for 18-25 year olds, and
• Saturday Chill Sessions

This week’s show also has an ACDC music theme as South Australia prepares for the massive concert!

Monday 22nd Feb Show features Bagster Road Community Centre 10am on PBA FM 89.7 FM

Fiona Mulholland (Salisbury North Urban Improvement Project) and Jan (Chairperson of Bagster Road Community Centre Inc) join Bob today (Monday) to talk about the next major event at Bagster Rd Community Centre.

A major open day for the community of Salisbury North, this event will include heaps of entertainment, rides, performances. Listen to the details on the show or ring Bagster for more information.

Drumming classes happen each week at Bagster and they are great for learning co-ordination and are great stress relief.

There are many volunteering opportunities at Bagster and you can always pop in for a great coffee from their social enterprise "Cafe 17" open Monday to Friday 10am until 3pm.

Bagster also has a creche as part of its early years project and some fantastic low cost learning opportunities.

8th Feb show : 10am Monday Community Matters Radio Show on PBA FM 89.7 – Mawson Lakes a Learning community!

This weeks show is hosted by Annie Payne, City of Salisbury's Learning Development Coordinator and produced by Robert Deijnum from Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre.

This week Annie Payne discusses upcoming events at Mawson Lakes including :-

1.Learning Taster Series

This program will feature at a number of sights across City of Salisbury and will run from early March until May this year.

There will be free learning tasters across the eight week period which are practical, applied, hands on learning experiences in areas such as Information Technology, Budget cooking and hospitality. The FREE tasters are designed to help people onto a learning or employment pathway.

2.Cert III in Aged Care

The Mawson Centre, in responding to a skills shortage area, is partnering with a private RTO to deliver a 11 week government funded training program.

The program is 4 days per week, 9am – 4pm, for 11 weeks.

Subject to funding confirmation, the program will commence mid to late February.

3.Multicultural Festival - 20th March 2010
Held at the Mawson Centre it will be a celebration including food, dance and music. This is during National Harmony Week.

4.May Mawson Month
Annually The Mawson Centre celebrates the life of Sir Douglas Mawson after who the suburb and the centre are named. The program will include 3 or 4 events during the first week of May.

5.May / June City of Salisbury Learning Festival
Planning is under way to celebrate the enormous learning that is occurring across the City of Salisbury and raising the profile of the City as a learning City.

This weeks show is hosted by Heather Hewitt, Coordinator of Pooraka Farm Community Centre and produced by Robert Deijnum from Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre.

First Show for 2010 : Youth and Australia Day


The 'Community Matters' radio show, produced by the Youth and Neighbourhood Services Division, is back for 2010 each Monday Morning at 10am on PBA FM 89.7.

On this todays show (Monday) , the weekly host is Kate Walker from Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre and she talks about some of the youth centres programs, highlights and discusses the Australia Day Community Event hosted by Rotary tommorrow and interviews a volunteer Carina Foerster.

Carina talks about what she gets out of volunteering and the types of roles she undertakes.
